Pierre Berton Signing Books
Canadian Author Pierre Berton once said, "A Canadian is somebody who knows how to make love in a canoe."

In 2007 the CBC held a nation-wide debate to discover what Canadians viewed as the Seven Wonders of Canada.  After much debate and a vote, the canoe was declared one of the Seven Wonders.  In celebration, the Canadian Canoe Museum declared a National Canoe Day.
This year the celebration continues.  The week of Saturday, June 15 to Sunday, June 23 is National Paddling Week.  In Haldimand County the Third Annual Day of 1000 Canoes on the Grand River will take place on Saturday, June 22.

RECONCILIATION

Some may have blamed you that you took away
The verses that could move them on the day
When, the ears being deafened, the sight of the eyes
     blind
With lightning you went from me, and I could find
Nothing to make a song about but kings,
Helmets, and swords, and half-forgotten things
That were like memories of you ~ but now
We'll out, for the world lives as long ago;
And while we're in our laughing, weeping fit,
Hurl helmets, crowns, and swords into the pit.
But, dear, cling close to me; since you were gone,
My barren thoughts have chilled me to the bone.

~ W. B. Yeats (June 13, 1865 - January 28, 1939) Irish poet and Senator, founded Abbey Theatre.
First Irishman to receive the Nobel Prize in literature, 1923, honoured for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation."

Planting Trees for Posterity ~

KING'S ROAD PUBLIC SCHOOL
Among those participating in the first Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony at King's Road were the Burlington Mayor, Ward 1 Councillor, President of Landscape Ontario, the City Arborist and Haldimand Stewardship Council.

Students were provided with packets of native tree seeds to take home and plant.  The city of Burlington boasts 3,800 hectares of natural wooded areas. Each year another 1000 trees are planted.

Haldimand Oak
Thought for Today ~

A group of folks who "care about their little piece of Haldimand County" are participating today in an Arbor Day event in Burlington.   Members of the Haldimand Stewardship Council will hand out native tree seeds to public school children.

The city of Burlington has been participating in Arbor Day events for over 35 years.  The city has an Urban Forest Management Plan for 2011 - 2030 ~ currently an average canopy cover of 23%.  Burlington's 53,000 street trees provide an estimated $3.5 million annually in environmental benefits alone.

The Haldimand Stewardship Council is providing seeds from St. Williams Forestry Station in Norfolk.  Species include Shagbark Hickory, Bitternut, Red Oak and Bur Oak.
