"The greatest pleasure in life is that of reading. Why not then own the books of great novelists when the price is so small."

"Of all the amusements which can possibly be imagined for a hard-working man, after his daily toil, or in its intervals, there is nothing like reading an entertaining book. It calls for no bodily exertion. It transports him into a livelier, and gayer, and more diversified and interesting scene, and while he enjoys himself there he may forget the evils of the present moment. Nay, it accompanies him to his next day's work, and gives him something to think of besides the mere mechanical drudgery of his every-day occupation ~ something he can enjoy while absent, and look forward with pleasure to return to."

Historic Cayuga ~ King Street

Today the Village Green on King Street is quite different than it was during the early years of old Cayuga. A picturesque gazebo replaces a market place where horse
-drawn carriages once gathered. The old town hall and fire station stood where today's library is.

Historic King Street ~ Cayuga, Ontario

Grindstone Creek Gallery Pottery Studio & Gift Store ~ Opening on Saturday, June 25, 2011

A new shop on historic King Street, downtown Cayuga. It is an exciting development watching life return to what was originally the main business section of the village. In fact, King Street crossed the Grand River in the early years ~ bridging an island in the middle.

Kimberly and John Jeffrey came camping in the Haldimand area and decided to stay, purchasing the former Oddfellows Hall. The beautiful red-brick archways of their new store and studio are over a hundred and fifty years old.

Store Hours:
Tuesday: by appointment
Wednesday to Saturday: 11 am - 5 pm
Sunday: 1 pm - 4 pm
Monday: Closed

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better place than we found it, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one breath breathed easier because you lived, This is to have succeeded."

~ Bessie Anderson Stanley (Amer., b. before 1900, d. 1952)
Best known for the famous poem, "What is Success?" written for a contest in 1904, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Time ~

" That great mystery of Time, were there no other; the illimitable silent never-resting thing called Time, rolling, rushing on, swift, silent, like an all-embracing ocean tide, on which we and all the Universe swim like exhalations, like apparitions which are and then are not: this is, forever very literally a miracle; a thing to strike us dumb ~ for we have no word to speak about it!"
~ Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881) Scottish satirical writer, Victorian Romanticism.

"What better way to win a heart than to spend a lazy summer afternoon in some shady and secluded country spot, a stream meandering by at the foot of the grassy slope, a few fleecy clouds floating over head, and a bright red-and-white checkered cloth spread out, upon which sits the champagne, the fat wedge of pate de campagne, the strawberries and cream?"

"Curiouser and curiouser" ~ A phrase from Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland books.

Another familiar phrase, "sometimes I have believed as many as six imposible things before breakfast," endures and enters into our everyday use."

Personally, I relate to poor Alice's bizarre experiences ~ in her case, falling down a rabbit hole, passing through a mirror, shrinking, expanding, showing up in the most absurd surroundings among characters that seem surreal. Unexpected, unpredictable change!

What is normal? What is ordinary?

There is something forbidding about yards surrounded by giant earth berms (topsoil covered in weeds) and barbed wire. We were unable to take photos of the fields of solar panels.

Humpty Dumpty to Alice, Looking-Glass

I told them once, I told them twice:
They would not listen to advice.
~ ~

I said it very loud and clear:
I went and shouted in his ear.
But he was very stiff and proud:
He said, 'You needn't shout so loud!'

Chap. 6, Humpty Dumpty

Thought for Today:

"Now I declare that's too bad!" Humpty Dumpty cried, breaking into a sudden passion.
"You've been listening at doors ~ and behind trees ~ and down chimneys ~ or you couldn't have known it!"
"I haven't indeed!" Alice said very gently. "It's in a book."
"Ah, well! They may write such things in a book," Humpty Dumpty said in a calmer tone.

Chiefswood Park (Click 3x on photo)
SHADOW RIVER ~ E. Pauline Johnson
(TEKAHIONWAKE)
A stream of tender gladness,
Of filmy sun, and opal tinted skies;
Of warm midsummer air that lightly lies
In mystic rings,
Where softly swings
The music of a thousand wings
That almost tones to sadness.

Midway 'twist earth and heaven,
A bubble in the pearly air, I seem
To float upon the sapphire floor, a dream
Of clouds of snow,
Above, below,
Drift with my drifting, dim and slow,
As twilight drifts to even.

The little fern-leaf, bending
Upon the brink, its green reflection greets,
And kisses soft the shadow that it meets
With touch so fine,
The border line
The keenest vision can't define;
So perfect is the blending.

The far, fir trees that cover
The brownish hills with needles green and gold,
The arching elms o'erhead, vinegrown and old,
Repictured are
Beneath me far,
Where not a ripple moves to Shades underneath, or over. Exerpt from Shadow River,Flint and Feather, E. Pauline Johnson, 1912
