Haldimand County Council has slated the landmark Cayuga Hotel for demolition for fall, 2016, with the planned new Cayuga Library to begin in the spring.  Unlike Cayuga's current library (see below) set in the quiet Village Green, the new library will be within feet of busy Highway 3, specifically at the intersection of Hwy. 3 and Cayuga Street.



Many of us disagree with relocating the library in Highway 3 intersection.  It is a done-deal.

Without Warning the new sidewalk is torn up

So...The Neat L'l Bookshop will be closed today.  The contact numbers are posted on the door.  No one called us.  What happened?  Our only clue yesterday was a UNION GAS vehicle and numerous Link-Line Contractors Inc. vehicles in the neighbourhood.  Today:

...on the other side of the street.  We have contacted our county councillor.  Fred Morison, thank you for coming this morning at 7:00 a.m. and forwarding our complaint to the project managers.  Businesses do not quickly recover from being closed over and over again - unpredictably - during advertised OPEN HOURS.  At one point we were left with a two-foot drop from our door for two weeks, without any prior warning or any solution in sight.  We were closed.

CLOSED FOR THE SECOND DAY ~ This is a foot-and-a-half drop into rubble.  We cannot explain as a small business why the county contract leaves us in these conditions.  We apologize to our customers and friends for any inconvenience and invite the Mayor, the Councillors and the County Project Manager to visit the small businesses in Cayuga.

To our Readers:  John has kept the bookshop OPEN regular hours [I would have closed and picketed the Mayor's office.]  We have no dust control on Highway 3 in front of the bookshop.  On Friday afternoon several of us reached out to the municipality, the various project managers including Councillor Fred Morison, County of Haldimand Project Mgr. Mike King, Elgin Construction and Vallee Consultants.  In his defence, Councillor Morison came to the Towpath on The Grand and to The Neat Little Bookshop on Saturday.  We do not understand how these conditions have been allowed to exist; however, we are hoping for water/calcium trucks to begin regular trips along Talbot Street (Hwy 3) as early as today, Monday.

We actually thought that the absence of public parking would shut us down ~ the dust issue has become more urgent.  Although the locals call it Talbot Street, this is the main artery from Windsor to Fort Erie ~ a heavily travelled highway with trucks and various vehicles that were in the past prohibited from crossing the old bridge. Let's lower the speed limit temporarily during construction from 50 km to 30 and bring in the dust control trucks.
