Of all the sounds despatched abroad,
There's not a charge to me
Like that old measure in the boughs,
That phraseless melody

The wind does, working like a hand
Whose fingers brush the sky,
Then quiver down, with tufts of tune
Permitted gods and me.

When winds go round and round in bands,
And thrum upon the door,
And birds take places overhead,
To bear them orchestra,

I crave him grace, of summer boughs,
If such an outcast be,
He never heard that fleshless chant
Rise solemn in the tree,

As if some caravan of sound
On deserts, in the sky,
had broken rank,
Then knit, and passed
In seamless company.

~ Emily Dickinson

On Flowers ~

"This true old rose scent, the scent that has charmed humanity from time immemorial, is assuredly the most exquisite and refreshing of all floral odors ~ Pure, transparent, incomparable ~ an odor into which we may, so to speak, burrow deeply without finding anything coarse or bitter, in which we may touch bottom without losing our sense of exquisite pleasure."
~ Louise Beebe Wilder

"The flowers are nature's jewels, with whose wealth she decks her summer beauty."
~ George Croly

"Now that the roses were in high bloom, the purple-blue delphiniums stretched to peer over the tops of picket fences."
~ Rodello Hunter

"There are strange evenings when the flowers have a soul."
~ Albert Samain

"Flowers have an expression or countenance as much as men or animals.  Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression; some are pensive and diffident; others again are plain, honest, and upright, like the broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock."
~ Henry Ward Beecher

"Daylilies colored orchid, cream, peach make me slightly sick, and the names are awful too:  I would blush to admit I was growing Precious One, Disneyland, or Bitsy."
~ Eleanor Perenyi

"Rooted securely in the earth, trees reach toward the heavens.  All across the planet, trees--in a wonderful profusion of form and function--literally hold the world together.  Their leaves receive the Sun's energy for the benefit of all terrestrial creatures and transpire torrents of water vapor into the atmosphere.  Their branches and trunks provide shelter, food, and habitat for mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, and other plants.  And their roots anchor the mysterious underworld of rock and soil.  Trees are among Earth's longest-lived organisms; their lives span periods of time that extend far beyond our existence, experience, and memory.  Trees are remarkable beings.  Yet they stand like extras in life's drama, always there as backdrops to the ever-changing action around them, so familiar and omnipresent that we barely take notice of them."

~ David Suzuki, introduction to Tree / A Life Story, Art by Robert Bateman, Greystone Books, 2004.

"This solitary tree!~ a living thing
Produced too slowly ever to decay;
Of form and aspect too magnificent
     To be destroyed."

~ William Wordsworth
