View from Our WindowIf you've been to the bookshop this week you have seen the pet-shop sign.

Playing in the hobby of nostalgic paper as we do, old periodicals show up.  This one, "Sunshine Magazine" from 1970, caught my eye I suppose because of the word SUNSHINE on a particularly dreary day.

"A wise man goeth forth cheerily, through fair weather and through foul.  He knoweth his journey must be sped, so he carrieth his sunshine with him." is the magazine's tag line.

The real focus of my attention was this quaint ad for PenDelfins.  Are these not the cute little figures that bring astonishingly high prices today?

"If instead of a gem, or even a flower, we should cast the gift of a loving thought into the heart of a friend, that would be giving as the angels give."

(Leonard and Virginia Woolf invited Dame Ethel*, then quite elderly, to dinner at their house at Rodmell in Sussex.)
"Dame Ethel bicycled the twenty miles from the village where she lived to Rodmell, dressed in rough tweeds.  About two miles from her destination she decided that perhaps she was not suitably dressed for a dinner party.  She thought that possibly corsets were required to smarten up her figure.  Accordingly, she went into a village shop and asked for some corsets.  There were none.  Distressed, she looked round the shop and her eye lighted on a bird cage, which she purchased.  About twenty minutes later, Virginia went into her garden to discover Dame Ethel in a state of undress in the shrubbery struggling with the bird cage, which she was wrenching into the shape of corsets and forcing under her tweeds."

[Ladies, next time you agonize over the appropriateness of your dress, enter the room confidently and think of Dame Ethel.] lbw

"So many things we love are you, I can't seem to explain by little things, but flowers and beautiful handmade things ~ small stitches.  So much of our reading and thinking, so many sweet customs and so much of our . . . well religion.  It is all you.  I hadn't realized it before.  This is so vague but do you see a little, dear Grandma?
I want to thank you."
