Dr. L. E. Barnard

A major landmark on the corner of Cayuga St. and King is looking a little more stately. Dr. L. E. Barnard, chiropractor, opened his new office on Monday.

The "old" Post Office has been renovated and redesigned for Grand River Chiropractic. Congratulations and welcome Dr. Barnard and staff.

The Dear Little Shamrock of Ireland

The Dear Little Shamrock

There's a dear little plant that grows in our isle,
'Twas St. Patrick himself sure that set it:
And the sun on his labour with pleasure did smile,
And with dew from his eye often wet it.
It shines thro' the bog, thro' the brake, thro' the mireland,
And he called it the dear little shamrock of Ireland.
(CHORUS:)
The dear little shamrock, the sweet little shamrock,
The dear little, sweet little shamrock of Ireland.

~ Andrew Cherry, Irish songwriter (1762 - 1812), son of a bookseller, Limerick, Ireland.

Have you noticed? Green is showing up everywhere!
Wreaths, garlands, hats, t-shirts, streamers, shamrocks and leprechauns.

The above lyrics appear on an Irish-linen apron ~ made in (where else?!) Ireland.

Marilyn Monroe

Black and white photo at left from Wikipedia." Marilyn in Blue" by Scott Walker

Fans of singer, actress Marilyn Monroe will recall that she was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926.

Monroe's troubled life and tragic death over-shadowed the fact that she was an intelligent, gifted woman with dreams and talent that took her all the way to the American President's birthday party. She sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to John Kennedy on May 18, 1962.

Available at the Neat Little Bookshop, Marilyn in Blue, an air-brush interpretation by Scott Walker of Waterdown, Ontario.
Limited prints 13 x 19 inches - $19; 11 x 17 - $15; 8.5 x 11 - $8 (unframed)

Stories Along the Grand

Stories Along the Grand is now available at the Neat Little Bookshop in Cayuga. Published by The York Grand River Historical Society, this illustrated book is a collection of writings by local historians past and present.

The many contributors ~ too many to mention here ~ are closely connected with The Grand River that winds through Haldimand County ~ present-day Town of Haldimand~ to empty into Lake Erie at Port Maitland. The families, the river enterprises and settlements (that are in some cases only ghost-towns today) dating back to 1783 make up this 194-page treasure.

We are indebted to the members of The York Grand River Historical Society for their commitment to preserving our fascinating heritage.

Champions

"Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill."

~ Muhammad Ali, American champion boxer

(Famous champions express our thoughts well. We are too busy at the Neat Little Bookshop, shovelling ~ digging ourselves out of the snow ~ to come up with original thoughts!)

Your Smile for Today ~

"Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity."

~ Christopher Morley, American novelist (1890 - 1957)
